2018 Things to Know

Who are we?

The Antigonish Stoírm Volleyball Club was established in 1998 and provides a quality volleyball experience for local athletes at all skill levels. The Club also strives to ensure that its skilled players are challenged and receive opportunities to play in significant provincial and national events.

The age categories have expanded from last years VNS policy of a maximum of two over-aged athletes born in the months of September to December of the previous year, to an unlimited number.

Full age categories are as follows:

18U: Athletes born between September 1, 2000 and Dec 31 2001 (16 months)
17U: Athletes born between September 1, 2001 and Dec 31 2002 (16 months)
16U: Athletes born between September 1, 2002 and Dec 31 2003 (16 months)
15U: Athletes born between September 1, 2003 and Dec 31 2004 (16 months)
14U: Athletes born between September 1, 2004 and Dec 31 2005 (16 months)
13U: Athletes born after September 1, 2003

Depending on registration numbers the Club plans to have male and female teams in the following age classifications for the 2016 season:

12U, 13 U, 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U, U18

How can I help?

  1. Be a Positive Parent – encourage your son or daughter to have fun. Offer to help with their team, tell them they are improving, compliment their play, encourage them to complement their teammates and coaches, tell them it is important to help pick-up balls and set-up the net, say kind things about the officials; being positive is contagious!
  2. Be a Parent Manager – this person helps to coordinate team travel, contacts the Club Treasurer for tournament fees, distributes and collect uniforms, organizes parent volunteers to assist in hosting tournaments and can also assist the Coach in any administrative matters. And no, you don’t have to do it alone – two or more parents can share the duties of this position.

 How much does it cost?

The Club fee will be $300 per player in age categories U13 to U18.

For U12 the fee is $130 per player.

There is a payment plan with the online registration if you choose. Explained on Registration page.

Is there a rebate for more than one family member?

Yes. For each additional family member you will receive a $50 discount.

Why $300 vs $130?

For U14 to U18 The Club pays a mandatory $35 to Volleyball Nova Scotia fee and $25 Volleyball Canada fee, purchase Club T-Shirts of all players, pays entry fees for two away tournaments (approximately $200 registration fee per tournament) and pays the entry fee for the provincial tournaments (approximately $350 registration) as well as coaches’ travel expenses to these tournaments. The Club will also attempt to host a home tournament for each age category. For the U12 division there are no VNS tournaments so no travel is involved; the fees for VNS and CVA remain the same.

Individual teams that wish to participate in additional tournaments will be responsible for the tournament fees and coach’s travel expenses associated with attending these tournaments. Sometimes fund raising is necessary to cover extra expenses (jerseys, balls, other equipment).

It is the Stoírm Club’s philosophy that a family’s financial constraints should not pose a barrier to participation by any youth. Such circumstances should be discussed with a member of the executive.

How does my child get picked for a team?

Tryouts will be held in December for male and females in all age categories to rank players based on skill to be placed on a competitive team or a development team.

What is Tier 1 and Tier 2?

Tier 2 teams will focus more on the skill development of all players, and therefore playing time may be more equal, however the coach and/or team officials make the final decision as to playing time.

Tier 1 will focus more on the skills of players and does not guarantee 100% equal playing time on any team or at any event; this is reflective of Tier 1 throughout the province.

Does the Club have any policies I need to know about?
